A 3-year-old boy is in critical but stable condition after being shot in the head early Saturday morning in Brooklyn, according to police.
The toddler, a babysitter and a man were inside a second-floor apartment at 520 E. 21st St. in Flatbush when shots rang out at around 3 a.m., authorities said.
Officials said the boy was hit on the left side of his head.
It is unclear whether the shots came from inside or outside the apartment, police said. Police were waiting to obtain a warrant Saturday morning to get inside the building
Law enforcement sources said the man who was in the apartment was taken into custody for questioning, although it is unclear what the man's relationship is to the boy or the babysitter. No one has been charged in connection with the shooting.
Neighbors said the boy's name is Terell and describe him as a sweet child.
"He's a nice little boy, my god, how he get shot?" wondered Jocelyn Harris.
The boy, who was initially listed in serious condition at Kings County Hospital, is now in stable condition.
Neighborhood residents said they were shocked and saddened that such a young child was injured by a gunshot.
"A 3-year-old should not be worried about getting shot," said James Nicholas, who lives nearby. "A 3-year-old should be running around chasing little kids like them."
