3-Year-Old Boy Dies in Fall from Apartment Window in Harlem: Authorities

A boy died after he fell 13 stories from a window in Harlem. Ida Siegal reports.

A toddler died Sunday evening after falling from an apartment building window in Harlem, FDNY officials said.

Three-year-old Latyr Sene fell at about 8 p.m. from a 13-story window in the Harlem River Houses II complex on Frederick Douglass Boulevard and 152nd Street, police said.

Some witnesses said they saw the boy in the window moments before he plunged 13 stories. Others said they heard a loud noise when he hit the ground.

“The boy was laying on the ground in the dirt. Just still. He fell. We heard the big bang, and we looked outside the window. He was on the ground,” witness Annette Aiken said.

“Ladies were screaming. They were like, ‘Oh my god! Oh my god!’ You could hear him hit the ground,” one witness said.

Paramedics were able to revive the boy and he was rushed to Harlem Hospital. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries Sunday night.

It's unclear what the parents were doing at the time the boy fell. Witnesses said the mother of the child ran down screaming.

“She was just crying, she was just crying. And just went into the ambulance and taken away,” witness Juliette Monterio said.

Investigators were attempting to determine whether a window guard was installed and properly secured in the apartment. They recovered a window guard on the sidewalk and are looking into whether or not it's from the same apartment. Police said it's possible that the guard fell out with the boy, but at this point it is unclear.

Meanwhile, neighbors are trying to digest what happened and the horror they witnessed on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

"I don't understand how you let that happen," Aiken said.

No arrests have been made, police said.
