Ten members of a World AIDS Day protest that gathered around a breakfast in Brooklyn attended by Mayor Bloomberg were arrested this morning, law enforcement officials said.
The protest, called a “schmear” campaign, consisted of 40 members of Housing Works dressed as bagels who took to the streets outside the Brooklyn Public library to protest Bloomberg's refusal to approve a 30 percent rent cap for AIDS patients who are also on welfare.
Ten members, including CEO Charles King, was arrested after laying in the middle of the street to block traffic.
The Housing Works website says that it is a group, “committed to ending the twin crises of AIDS and homelessness.”
The protest also marks World AIDS Day. In New York, and cities around the world, 24-vigils are being held to mark victims of the disease. In City Hall Park, hundreds of people braved the rain and wind for a midnight ceremony where the names of AIDS victims were read aloud.
