A possible sinkhole on I-80 eastbound in Morris County, New Jersey closed the roadway while NJDOT crews performed emergency repairs.

A highway in New Jersey was closed for hours on Monday for repairs to the roadway after a possible sinkhole appeared.

I-80 eastbound was shut down in the Morris County town of Wharton as NJDOT crews work to repair a depression that emerged, officials side. Thousands of drivers in the area were detoured at Exit 34 after a depression was seen in the center lane of I-80 around 6:45 a.m. Monday.

Crews have not yet determined the cause of the depression. NJDOT said I-80 eastbound will remain closed until further notice.

NJDOT advised drivers to take Exit 28 to Route 46 eastbound or Route 10 eastbound, rather than waiting for the detour at Exit 34.

A line of cars could be seen on North Main Street in Wharton waiting to get back on the highway after being detoured off it. Chopper 4 showed the traffic backed up on Route 80 for miles in Morris County.

One local business tried to take advantage of the traffic backup: Pop's Bagel Shop in Wharton was offering any size coffee for 80 cents while I-80 was closed in the area.

A massive sinkhole the size of a four-story building appeared in the same area in December as a result of an abandoned mineshaft. It took four days to fix. Crews are set to work around the clock to repair the new sinkhole, though it was not immediately clear how long the fixes would take.
