Romney Smith reports on the investigation.
A woman and two children were found dead in an apartment in Jersey City, authorities said early Thursday, and a suspect was in police custody.
After getting a 911 call around 1 a.m., responding officers went to a basement apartment on Hutton Street near Liberty Avenue, according to police. Detectives said they found a broken window and shattered glass littering the sidewalk outside. Inside, a woman was found unconscious, along with a 9-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl, each of whom suffered stab wounds.
The woman, 31-year-old Luisa Urbano, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said. Her two children, Juan Martin Urbano and his younger sister, Diana Ramirez, were rushed to Jersey City Medical Center. They died shortly after.

The cause and manner of death for the three was not yet determined. The prosecutor's office called the killings an act of domestic violence.
"She was the mother...always with her kids. Can’t say a bad word about her," said a neighbor who only identified himself as James. "They all lived together, and it just sounds like something that happened all of the sudden."

Another neighbor, John Paredes, said he heard "they were just screaming and I hear the glass breaking."
The relationship between the suspect, later identified by the county prosecutor's office as Napoleon Romero-Anduray, and the victims was not immediately clear. The mayor of Jersey City said Romero-Anduray tried to stab himself before he was taken into custody; he was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
