In a bold move, the bible of the fashion set, Vogue, is letting its readers choose the best-dressed women of the decade. (Seriously, when was the last time Vogue invited ordinary folk to weigh in on much of anything? We're in!)
Vogue has pre-selected nominees from each year -- no doubt to make sure that they'll be rather pleased with whomever actually is voted most stylish) -- and we do have a bone to pick with a few of the noms. There are a few egregious offenders, like J. Lo's down-to-there Versace dress, which may have been a fashion-forward choice (bravo!), but wound up on the bottom end of our Decade in Fashion. Then, some ladies with serious style would up nominated for the most "blah" outfits of all time -- Jennifer Aniston in a simple red strapless sheath, for example, and Michelle Obama in a "blah" black dress (bring us color and J. Crew cardis!). There also seems to be an interesting abundance of Vogue contributors in the mix -- Lauren Santo Domingo and Marina Rust make the cut. Yes, these ladies are stylish, but doesn't it seem a bit, well, incestuous?
On the other hand, there are some serious gems -- some we'd even forgotten. Of course, there are the usual suspects -- Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman -- but there are wonderful surprises, like Kate Moss's pixie-like 'do from the early aughts, a young Kate Bosworth's girlish style, Charlotte Gainsbourg's fringe-y cocktail dress, an all-over white lace dress Mary-Kate Olsen wore in 2008, and Julianne Moore's unforgettable emerald-green gown (matched with her scarlet hair) in 2004. Overall, definitely worth clicking through ... probably several times.
Pick your favorites on Vogue.com and see the final results on January 25 -- you never know if the arbiters of style will let you weigh in again.
