Trent Reznor Nominated for Academy Award

Well, Trent Reznor is finally on the inside.

The erstwhile Nine Inch Nails frontman’s soundtrack for The Social Network, composed with English producer Atticus Ross, has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score. The announcement was made this morning in Beverly Hills by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2009 Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Mo'Nique.

Reznor and Ross recently won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score: Motion Picture for their Social Network efforts, which New Yorker music critic Alex Ross describes aptly as "brutal, catatonic." In his acceptance speech, which was not televised, Reznor said, "A year ago I had no idea I'd have the opportunity to score a film. The idea of standing up here to accept this award is surreal."

In coda, he then Tweeted, "Holy s--t!"

The Social Network has four competitors for the Academy Award for Best Original Score: How to Train Your Dragon by John Powell, Inception by Hans Zimmer, The King's Speech by Alexandre Desplat, and 127 Hours by A.R. Rahman. The Awards will be presented on February 27.

Reznor and Ross will collaborate again with Social Network director David Fincher by composing the score to the U.S. film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, set for release later this year.

No word on whether Reznor plans to wear a swan dress, but obviously he should. It could be black, for topicality.
