New signage at the space formerly occupied by Filene's Basement in Chelsea signals the arrival of Marshalls, which happens to be the sister store to TJ Maxx upstairs. Confused? We are, too.
The Shophound spotted the new Marshalls signage downstairs at the massive compound on Sixth Avenue and 19th Street, and seemed similarly confused that the discount superstore would park itself right beneath its sister discount superstore, TJ Maxx. While the two stores are doubtless different in some way, it's pretty hard to discern from the surface: Marshalls claims to ship "world-famous fashion" to their stores, adding "thousands of new styles" every week. TJ Maxx has certainly made strides this year in upping its "fashionista" image, its main tenet remains offering "brand name and designer fashions" at "up to 60% off department store prices." It certainly seems like the two would have some pretty obvious overlap, though maybe they intend to create a multi-level discount-a-palooza.
From the looks of things, the new Marshalls won't be opening any time soon, but between the Manhattan openings and expansions now completed or underway for several major discount retailers (TJ Maxx and Nordstrom Rack among them), it's clear that 2010 is the year of off-price shopping.
