Despite efforts to appease critics by donating profits to charity, MAC Cosmetics has canceled its limited-edition makeup collection with Rodarte, due to the line's controversial name-reference to Juarez, the dangerous Mexican border town.
The embattled region has one of the world's highest murder rates—a figure that includes a large number of young women and girls. Rodarte's Mulleavy sisters were undoubtedly inspired by the rugged natural beauty of the land and the the stark contrast of the city's industrial culture, however direct references via makeup product names like "Ghost Town" and "Factory" quickly set off a storm of controversy on the blogosphere.
MAC has issued a statement on its Facebook page announcing that while the brand would not be shipping the products, it intends to honor its promise to donate projected proceeds of the line to charities that benefit the security and human rights crises in Juarez.
