18-year-old Matt Connor is no longer an anonymous member of Anonymous, the loosely-organized internet-based group of pranksters that, in the past, has (as their website notes), "uncovered or brought into the public eye hundreds of illegal actions, fraudulent activities, and human rights violations perpetrated by the Church of Scientology."
Last week, Connor greased himself up with Vaseline and covered himself with his friends' pubic hair and nail clippings, all in the eye of his friend's camera. He then walked across Times Square and entered the Scientology center at W. 46th St., where he proceeded to toss a bunch of books around and smear grease on the TV's. At the same time, Anonymous members at home made a few phone calls and sent a few faxes, attempting to "distract" those in charge at the center.
This would've been it, a light act of vandalism committed by an 18-year old kid. But then, the pranksters posted their "attack" on YouTube and called it "Operation Slickpubes: The Ballad of Agent Pubit." And yes, it was a ballad. Lyrics to the song tell the tale of a "path to victory...paved with pubes," and "Brave agent pubit," who "safely got away." Although, in a story in this morning's Daily News, we learn he didn't get away.
The paper reports, "A hooligan claiming to be a member of an anti-Scientology group was arrested Wednesday for attempting to "desecrate" the Church of Scientology with a wacky weapon - Vaseline, police said." He was charged with "burglary, criminal mischief and aggravated harassment as hate crimes," while his friend slipped away (not a result of the Vaseline), charge-free.
