The federal government has unveiled the new food plate, replacing the decades-old food pyramid visual that was meant to illustrate the recommended nutritional intake.
"MyPlate is a new generation icon with the intent to prompt consumers to think about building a healthy plate at meal times and to seek more information to help them do that by going to www.ChooseMyPlate.gov," a press release from the USDA announced. "The new MyPlate icon emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups.
The new logo arrives as part of the "Choose My Plate" campaign that will last over several years, encouraging people to take one action at a time to live healthier lives.
First on the list? Making half your plate fruits and vegetables.
The campaign's also getting into social media, with the USDA asking consumers to take photos of their plates and tweet them out with the hashtag #MyPlate or upload them on the USDA's Flickr photo group.
