When Rihanna stepped out in a head-turning, origami Christmas tree of a dress at Glamour's Women of the Year awards last night, we weren't sure what to think. But the more we looked, the more we loved it.
First of all, it takes a certain kind of woman to wear a complicated, haute couture dress like this Stephane Rolland piece without blinking, and Rihanna established herself last night as one of a handful of women (Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, and Charlize Theron come to mind) who can carry off this complicated of a look without looking like the dressing is wearing her.
We'd also add that while the dress is certainly complicated, it manages to expose enough make sure her figure is visible: her slender neck, the curve of her hip to the knee, etc. Viewed from side, the dress is particularly flattering -- and as everyone knows, fashion is three-dimensional art, not to be judged merely head-on.
Overall, where most of the award show attendants seemed content to rock minis and strapless cocktail attire, Rihanna brought couture to the red carpet and actually managed to pull it off.
