A bike share program is in the works for downtown Brooklyn.
The Boerum Hill Traffic Task Force met Tuesday night and announced that it will soon be requesting proposals for a vendor to run a bike share program, which allows riders to rent and return a bike at a series of pickup points. The first program will operate around downtown Brooklyn and could expand to other parts of Kings County in the future.
Brooklyn is home to the most bikers in the city and some residents feel a bike share program is a natural fit for the borough.
"It will encourage people to see the benefits of biking, and it will be a low cost way for people to experiment using a bike as a form of transportation," Boerum Hill resident Louie Fleck told the Brooklyn Paper.
Bike share programs are already in place in cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Montreal, Washington D.C. and Denver.
Manhattan will test a pilot bike share program beginning this summer.
