NJ Schools to Shut Down Wednesday; See Tri-State Closures Here

Tri-state schools are closing in an effort to help curb the spread of COVID-19. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the public school system would shut down Monday through April 20.

In New Jersey, more than 200 school districts are closed for either cleaning, possible exposure, confirmed exposure, presumptive positive cases or as a professional development day to instruct educators on remote learning capabilities and plans. Gov. Phil Murphy said it was an "inevitability" that all schools in the state would close at some point.

Here is a list of growing public and private schools, as well as colleges that have announced closures either voluntarily or by some government mandate. Click here for the latest coronavirus news in the tri-state.

New York City Public Schools

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that New York City public schools would close Monday, March 16, through at least April 20. Ultimately, schools may not be able to reopen in time to salvage the year, meaning they could remain closed at maximum for the rest of the 2019-2020 school calendar.

The total shutdown came after the governor ordered NYC schools to shut down early this week, following a plan from the city to ensure childcare for essential workers and that kids in need get the meals they would at school.

New Jersey Public Schools

Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday that all schools in the state -- pre-K, K-12 and institutions of higher education -- would be closed effective March 18.


Suffolk County, New York

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that all schools in the county will close for a period of two weeks, beginning Monday, March 16, to help curb the spread of the virus.

Nassau County, New York

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that all public and private schools in the county would be closed for two weeks, beginning Monday, March 16.

Orange County, New York

All class and extracurricular activities, public and private, will be canceled through March 27, according to the county executive's state of emergency order.

Newark, New Jersey

Newark Public Schools will be closed until March 30 out of an abundance of caution. All before or after school activities have been canceled, and learning at home programs will begin. Breakfast and lunch programs will still be available for all students at designated schools.

Montclair, New Jersey

Beginning Monday, March 16, the Montclair Public School District will close its schools for at least two weeks and implement remote learning. All after school and evening events are cancelled for the duration of the school closing period. During this time, food services will provide lunches for qualifying student from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at designated pick-up sites.

Ulster County, New York

All Ulster County schools will remain closed for at least 14 days starting March 16. After school and extracurricular events are cancelled. School superintendents and officials will provide additional guidance to their school communities.

Southampton, New York

Southampton schools will be closed March 16-20. Students will begin remote learning Tuesday, March 17, the district said.

Somers, New York

The Somers Central School District will be closed through March 17, the superintendent said. If necessary, the school district is prepared to extend the closure through March 27, during which time the students would be provided with remote learning plans.

South Orange-Maplewood Schools, New Jersey

The district will close schools for two weeks, taking unused snow days on March 16 and 17 and starting remote learning on March 18 through March 27, officials said Friday afternoon.

Woodbridge, New Jersey

The Woodbridge Township School District canceled school from from March 16 to March 20, and said there remains a possibility the closure could be extended beyond that. All extracurricular activities have been canceled, and students will be able to access learning material remotely.

Success Academy Charter Schools, New York

Success Academy Charter Schools have suspended on-campus learning and students in grades 5 through 12 will begin remote learning March 19. Students K-4 will be sent home Friday with books. Parents will be emailed lesson plan that includes assignments and other online resources.

Catholic Schools in Archdiocese of Newark

Catholic schools in the Archdiocese in Newark will be closed starting March 16 through March 20. The closure is out of an abundance of caution with the health of the community at the center, the diocese's spokesperson said.

Diocese of Brooklyn elementary schools

Elementary Catholic Academies and Parish Schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn will close March 16 to 20. The 16th will be a professional day for teachers and the rest of the week students will utilize online learning.

Clarkstown Central School District, New York

The Clarkstown Central School District will be closed for students March 16 through March 18, with all student activities and athletics canceled. Staff will report on Monday, while Tuesday and Wednesday are days off for students and staff.

Old Bethpage Central School District, Nassau County

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District will close March 13 through March 20 following an order from the Nassau County Department of Health. School officials say the closure is out of an abundance of caution and there are no additional confirmed COVID-19 cases in the district.

Bergen County Public Schools, New Jersey

All 75 school districts in Bergen County will close school buildings for two weeks starting March 13, with all schools transitioning to internet and electronic learning, the county executive said. Those students who get free or reduced price meals from the districts will be contacted by the districts, and all extracurricular activities have been suspended. All classes will be taught remotely via electronic or other means.

Catholic Elementary Schools, New York City

All elementary schools within the Archdiocese of New York will be closed from March 16 until March 20, with the possibility of the closer lasting longer. All activities, practices and sporting events run by the Catholic Youth Organizations and the Catholic High School Athletic Association have also been canceled indefinitely.

Stamford Public Schools, Stamford, Connecticut

Stamford Public Schools announced that all schools will be closed to students beginning Friday, March 12, 2020, through, at least, Friday, March 27, 2020, in light of ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

Bedford Schools, Westchester

The Bedford Central School District is closing all schools through April 3, after a staff member at Fox Lane Middle School was quarantined. Teachers will be reporting to school on March 16 and March 17 to complete preparations for students to access distance learning electronically. The district has also canceled all activities, events and meetings scheduled to take place in its schools.

West Point, New York

West Point notified cadets that their return from spring break would be delayed by two weeks until March 29. Cadets have been told to either go home or remain at home for the two weeks, although any who can't go or stay anywhere else will be allowed on campus.

CUNY and SUNY campuses, New York

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday, March 11, that all CUNY and SUNY students will finish the spring semester via remote learning starting March 19.

Farmingdale State College

Farmingdale State College announced that the school would be closed through March 22, due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 among a member of the campus community. It was not immediately clear whether that person was a student or a member of the faculty or staff.

New Rochelle Public Schools, New York

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced stringent new measures Tuesday to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Westchester County. Those measures include establishing a one-mile, two-week containment zone and closing down public schools in that area for two weeks. The impacted schools are limited to New Rochelle High School, Albert Leonard Middle School and Ward Elementary. At this point, the district superintendent says the plan is to have students return to school on Thursday, March 26.

Tuckahoe Union Free School District, New York

Schools in the Tuckahoe Union Free School District will be closed from March 12 to 25 due to their inclusion in the containment area proclaimed by the State of New York. During and after school activities during this time period are also canceled. There are no confirmed cases in our school district.

Westport Public Schools, Connecticut

The Westport School District learned that a number of district parents and students were in contact with an individual presumed to be positive with coronavirus. Due to this development, Westport Public Schools will be closed through March 25. All after-school and evening activities, including athletics, are canceled. The district will deep clean its schools, and remote learning could begin as soon as March 17.

East Hanover, New Jersey

The East Hanover Township School District is closing schools from March 16 through March 27, during which time students and teachers will have classes and lessons remotely via "distance learning," according to the district.

Rowan University, New Jersey

The university has extended Spring Break through March 27.

Syracuse University, New York

The university moves to online courses until March 30.

Columbia University, New York City

After "a member of our community has been quarantined as a result of exposure" to COVID-19, Columbia University implemented remote instruction, which will continue through the week after Spring Break.

Stony Brook University, Long Island

Stony Brook University will move to remote instruction starting once spring break is over on March 23, lasting through the rest of the semester, according to a message from the school's interim president.

Most non-classroom events and large gatherings will be canceled or postponed through at least March 31, however the campus — including academic advising, dining services, residence halls, library services, recreation programming, athletics facility services, and hospital and clinical services — will remain open throughout the remainder of the semester.

Yonkers, New Jersey

School officials plan to announce Monday how long all Yonkers schools will be closed beyond Tuesday, March 17. Information about remote learning will also be provided Tuesday, as well as the start of "Grab N Go" breakfast and lunch for students.

West Islip, Long Island

All schools in the West Islip School District will be open starting March 16, but all before and after school activities and meetings have been canceled.

Sag Harbor, Long Island

The Sag Harbor School District will be closed for students from March 12-March 22. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the schools, but canceling classes was done to ensure the students' health and safety.

Greenport, Long Island

The Greenport Union Free School District will close all schools through March 20. There have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 among the students and staff members, but out of an abundance of caution the buildings will be thoroughly cleaned.

East Williston School District, Long Island

The East Williston Union Free School District canceled school for students on March 16, which will be a superintendent's conference day for staff only. That night, the board of education will discuss and possibly implement a change to the school's academic year, which would close the school from March 17 through March 29. If that is approved, the school's spring break from April 13-17 would become schools days for students and staff.

Armonk, New York

The Byram Hills School District canceled classes through March 17, but buildings will be open so students and staff can pick up any materials they may need to conduct remote learning. Starting March 18 and going until April 3, students will use electronic lessons in lieu of classroom activities. The district's spring break is still scheduled for April 6-10. The decision comes after a Wampus teacher's spouse was exposed to a person with a confirmed case of COVID-19, who was not placed in mandatory quarantine but did isolate as a precaution.

The Brearley School, New York City

All classes will be taught online until the school's spring break, with classes set to resume March 30. The school said the decision came after notification that a parent was tested for COVID-19 but had not yet received the results.

East Ramapo, New York

A student at Pomona Middle School in Suffern, New York, tested positive for COVID-19, the school district said, leading them to close the school, as well as Hempstead Elementary School and Ramapo High School, through March 21. Anyone who spent time in the school since March 6 must self-quarantine, even though the student is not exhibiting symptoms.

Scarsdale, New York

A faculty member at Scarsdale Middle School tested positive for COVID-19, the district said Sunday. At the suggestion of the Westchester County Health Commissioner, the district said it would close all schools from March 9-18.

Westchester Day School, New York

The Westchester Day School (a private, independent school) will be closed until March 17 after one of its students tested positive for COVID-19, the Village of Mamaroneck said.

Keio Academy of New York

The school's campus will be closed for the remainder of the year, according to the school's website, but classes will be continued online.

Cranford, New Jersey

Cranford Public Schools announced its classes would be canceled on Monday, March 16, to give staff and administrators time to "develop strong and meaningful plans for your children in the event of school closures due to the coronavirus," a letter to parents read, in part. The day off will also give faculty time to clean and disinfect buildings.

New York University, New York City

All classes held at the New York campus are being held remotely beginning for the near future. After spring break during the week of March 15, classes will continue online for the week of March 22.

Residences and three dining halls will remain open during spring break. However, starting March 12, NYU students will not be permitted to sign in short-term guests including those with NYU IDs into residential facilities at any New York City location or at any Global Academic Centers. This policy will be in effect until further notice.

Effective immediately through at least March 29, schools, departments, programs and units are strongly discouraged from holding non-essential, large gatherings -- meaning those not related to core academic activities.  These should be cancelled, postponed, or conducted in a "virtual" manner.

In-person admissions-related visits to campus -- including tours, info sessions and admitted student events -- will be cancelled, effective though April. Instead, NYU will be providing opportunities for virtual campus visits. The university said Tuesday it would be closing all of their study abroad sites in Europe, including Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris and Prague.

NYU's business operations will remain open. Overall, administrators and staff are expected to be at their work assignments, and those deemed essential to NYU operations must be present. However, managers were given flexibility regarding teleworking and employees’ hours if circumstances warrant.

Skidmore College, New York

Classes are suspended through March 20.

Princeton University, New Jersey

The Ivy League school announced that it will give students who wish to do so the option to stay home after Spring Break and meet academic requirements remotely.

Additionally, in order to help mitigate the growing risk of transmission, the university will begin instituting a series of policies and practices this week based on the concept of social distancing, including limiting the number and size of campus gatherings and meetings.  These new policies will be in place through at least April 5.

Fordham University, New York City

Fordham University started teaching all classes either online or electronically March 12.

Spring break for the university will run as scheduled from March 14 through March 22. After the break, classes will continue in an online fashion.

Residential students were also encouraged to return home immediately. Those who cannot return home will be allowed to remain in their residence halls.

The university also announced it will curtail some on-campus operations and redirect certain personnel to work remotely. Effective immediately, university-sponsored student travel and non-essential university travel for faculty, staff and administrators will also be canceled.

All university events are canceled through at least April 1, which includes any event being held on campus, even if it's an outside group. Fordham events held at off campus venues in NYC will also be canceled or rescheduled.

Iona College, New York

Iona College started Spring Break early, canceling all in-person and online undergraduate and graduate arts & sciences classes beginning March 9.

There are no known or suspected cases of coronavirus at the school, the college said in a statement.

Students should work with their faculty regarding class content, midterms and internships. The Residence Halls closed early for Spring Break.

All internal activities and events planned to be held on Iona’s campus through Monday, March 23 will also be canceled.

Sacred Heart University, Connecticut

Sacred Heart University implemented online classes for all courses through March 29.

The Fairfield, Connecticut, college said there are no known or suspected cases of COVID-19, but were implementing the measures out of an abundance of caution. Students are allowed to stay on campus, with residence and dining halls remaining open; however, all major events on campus will be canceled.

New York Institute of Technology, New York City

All in-person classes at either New York Institute of Technology campus have been canceled; existing online courses will go on as planned.

The school's Auditorium on Broadway in Manhattan will be closed indefinitely. Most large New York Tech-sponsored events until March 31 have been canceled, although admissions events will be held.

St. John's University, Queens

Out of an abundance of caution, the University suspended face-to-face instruction at all locations. The University moved to online instruction Thursday, March 12, which will continue through Friday, March 27.

Additionally, one of the school's employees tested positive for coronavirus, and the school's Queens campus will be closed March 16-17.

Rutgers University, New Jersey

Rutgers announced it will cancel classes at all three of its campuses (Camden, Newark and New Brunswick) through the end of spring break, Sunday, March 22. Beginning on Monday, March 23, all course instruction will be delivered remotely, and will continue in that manner until at least April 3.

Students living in residence halls should leave campus as soon as possible. Students are strongly encouraged to remain off campus through April 3.

Beginning Thursday, March 12, Rutgers events and in-person meetings involving groups larger than 15 participants are cancelled through April 15. Guidance related to this policy will be reviewed again by April 1. Groups with events scheduled after April 15 are urged to begin considering alternative plans in case future events will need to be cancelled or postponed.

Additionally, all Rutgers-led international spring break programs are cancelled. All students in third-party study abroad programs are strongly encouraged to return. All international travel sponsored by Rutgers is suspended. Any member of university returning from a country designated Level 3 by the CDC is required to self-isolate for 14 days before returning to campus.

While university offices, labs and services will remain open during this time period, employees are strongly encouraged to use teleconference services, such as Webex, in lieu of in-person meetings.

Pace University, New York City

Pace University suspended in-person class meetings on all three campuses starting and move all classes to remote learning through March 29. Campus libraries will remain open as scheduled and school shuttles/buses will operate as scheduled.

Some specific programs may continue to meet in person. Deans will notify students and staff on a school- or college-specific basis.

Spring break for New York City and Pleasantville will continue as scheduled next week, with remote learning resuming after break. Residence halls will operate as normal during this period of remote learning and spring break. Meanwhile, dining halls will only be open during remote learning periods.

Students will not be permitted to sign in guests to their residence halls or other facilities in the period through March 29.

All large university events will be canceled, postponed, or moved to a virtual event through March 29. Athletics events will continue, per the Northeast-10 schedule, however, they will be closed to spectators.

Kean University, New Jersey

Kean University will begin remote education on Monday, March 16 to minimize the density of people on campus and reduce the potential health risk to the university community. Remote education is currently planned for March 16 to March 30.

On-campus events should be rescheduled whenever possible. No campus event should occur during this time period without prior approval from the relevant Vice President.

John Jay College, New York City

A student at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice tested positive for coronavirus, the school's president said, leading them to close the school March 12-18. Classes are set to resume online on March 19, and all campus facilities will remain open.

The student is at home recovering, and was only on campus for one evening class last week, and was not exhibiting symptoms until two days later. Out of an abundance of caution, the school closed to consult with public health, state and city officials, and said remote classes may have to be utilized.

University of New Haven, Connecticut

In-person classes, exams and events are canceled through March 24.

Long Island University, New York

Effective March 16, Long Island University will move to online instruction at all locations through March 27, 2020.

On March 12, the university announced that it was notified that a member of the LIU community, whose office is in Pell Hall/Life Sciences at LIU Post, was confirmed by the Nassau County Department of Health as testing positive for the coronavirus (COVID-19). Pell Hall/Life Sciences has been closed, and is scheduled for reopening on Friday, March 13 after disinfection.

St. Joseph's College, New York

St. Joseph’s College has cancelled in-person classes and academic events at both of its campuses, SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island, through March 27. There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus at the College.

Wyckoff, New Jersey

All school trips and out-of-district staff development, including the Grade 8 French class trip to Quebec and Montreal, have been canceled through April 30. A decision concerning the trips and staff development planned for May and June will be made at the beginning of April. However, field trips to other schools in the area or to locations in Wyckoff will take place as planned unless otherwise announced.

Additionally, Wyckoff School District will follow the Bergen Couny executive's decision to cancel classes for two weeks through March 27.

Plainview, Long Island

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District will be closed starting March 13, and will reopen March 20. While the superintendent said no additional cases of coronavirus had been found within the district, this would give the district more time to thoroughly clean the buildings and enhance the social distancing to contain the spread of the virus. All after school activities, athletics, PTA meetings, and other events will also be canceled.

The district also said that they will be providing modified instruction for students through online platforms to be used in the time away from school.

Trenton, New Jersey

The Trenton Board of Education has closed the city's public schools students and staff from March 16 through March 27. Lessons for all grades have been placed on the district website through Google classroom, and students who do not have internet access, the district will print out packets for students to complete.

Horace Mann School, New York City

The Bronx school canceled classes until Tuesday, March 31. Faculty and staff are told to report as directed in the meanwhile by the head of the school.

Red Bank, New Jersey

The Red Bank School Regional District, which serves the towns of Red Bank, Little Silver and Shrewsbury, switched to online/electronic courses starting March 12, and will remain using remote learning for the near future. The district received a report Monday afternoon that a resident of Little Silver was one of the presumptive positive patients, and that resident has a sibling who attends one of the region's schools.

The Julliard School, New York City

The Julliard School will be switching to all-remote classes starting on March 16, and lasting until March 29. All college division in-person classes, activities and performances between those dates were canceled. The school is encouraging all students to remain home after spring break, although a residence hall and campus cafeteria will remain open.

The Preparatory and Evening Divisions switched to remote classes starting March 10.

Mount Vernon, New York

Mount Vernon City School District canceled classes through March 27, and the district is postponing events and activities that may draw large crowds through April 30. An SAT exam scheduled for March 14 has been rescheduled for March 28.

Students who are sent to school and are symptomatic will be separated and a parent or guardian will be contacted to pick them up. The school district is neither equipped or trained to conduct COVID-19 testing.

Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC)

Due to the continuing concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19, the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) has canceled the remainder of its winter championship tournaments.

Mineola, Long Island

Chaminade High School will be closed through March 20, with virtual learning set to start for teachers and students. All events and activities, including sports try-outs and practices, are officially canceled until further notice.

Chaminade High School administration was notified that on Saturday, February 29, 2020, a student came into direct contact with someone who was diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus). This student has been in quarantine as of that date.  At this time, the student has not manifested any symptoms while under quarantine.
