A woman was hit by a car and thrown over a railing while trying to help a friend who had crashed her car while driving drunk, police said Saturday.
A 22-year-old woman was driving drunk when she crashed into a median on a Long Island Expressway overpass in Queens, officials said. The woman called a friend, Victoria Garratt, who came to help. A third person, an off-duty male emergency medical technician also pulled over to help, a law enforcement official said.
A fourth vehicle driven by an off-duty NYPD lieutenant crashed into Garratt's car, which hit her and threw her over a railing, the law enforcement official said.
Garratt, 22, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, officials said. The drivers of the third and fourth vehicle were treated for arm injuries.
The driver of the first car was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, police said. No one else was charged.
