NYPD on Guard for Poison Assassins Amid United Nations Gathering

There have been no specific threats, but the NYPD has consulted with British authorities to prepare for incidents involving weapons-grade nerve agents

Police seeking to secure the United Nations General Assembly are on guard for would-be assassins like the two men accused of poisoning a former Russian spy in England.

There have been no specific threats. But New York City's top counterterrorism official, John Miller, said on Thursday that the NYPD has consulted with British authorities to prepare for incidents involving weapons-grade nerve agents.

Miller said the NYPD and FBI have sought to identify and protect potential targets visiting or living in the city. He made the remarks at a news conference about security measures for the gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.

A Russian intelligence officer turned double agent for Britain and his daughter fell ill in March from poison that Britain says was planted by Russian agents.
