Demolition Begins on Roller Coaster Damaged by Sandy

The partially submerged roller coaster swept off a Jersey Shore amusement pier that has become an icon for the damage caused by Sandy is being removed.

Demolition crews with contractor Weeks Marine began removing the Jet Star coaster just after Prince Harry visited the storm-wrecked Seaside Heights Tuesday.

Casino Pier spokeswoman Toby Wolf said crews would work on removing the roller coaster using both barges in the water and on-shore equipment.

She said the removal was expected to be completed within 48 hours.

Casino Pier requested demolition crews save a portion of the Jet Star, Wolf said. The company plans to install it as part of a memorial on a new Casino Pier expected to be completed some time next year.
