Man Tries to Rape Pregnant Woman on Morning Dog Walk

The attempted assault was captured by surveillance cameras

Police are looking for the man who tried to rape a pregnant woman as she walked her dog down a Manhattan street Sunday morning.

Law enforcement officials say the 30-year-old victim, who is two months pregnant, was walking her dog across from a park on West 212th Street in Inwood around 7 a.m. when the suspect, who had been sitting on a park bench, grabbed her from behind.

Officials say he put his hands under her shorts, turned her around and tried to push her down, but she fought him off, biting his chest. A superintendent of a nearby apartment building heard her screams and came to her aid.

The attacker fled.

Authorities released surveillance video of the suspect that shows him trailing the woman, whose face is covered by a black circle in the video to protect her identity.

The video shows him calmly walk up behind her on the sidewalk and grab her. He tries to wrestle her to the ground, but she manages to stay on her feet and he eventually runs off.

One resident in the area said news of the attack was "very scary."

"That's the same time I walk," said Helen Smith. "I just got to be more aware of my surroundings instead of just walking my dog, not looking around."

Police ask anyone with information about the attack to call Crime Stoppers at (800)-577-TIPS.
