A young boy was attacked by a dog being walked by its owner in a Queens neighborhood Monday evening, horrifying neighbors as they watched the animal latch its jaw over the child's leg, witnesses and police said.
The dog, described by witnesses a pit bull, was on a leash being walked by its owner on North Conduit Ave. in Springfield Gardens when it suddenly went after the 6-year-old boy, neighbors said. The dog locked its jaw on the boy's leg and refused to let go for several minutes.
"The child was screaming, crying," said witness Sedrika Williams, who described the adult with him as "more panicked for the child."
Several people rushed over to pull the boy's foot out of the dog's mouth. Williams said the dog's owner and the boy's cousin both furiously attacked the dog to get it to release its grip on the screaming little boy.
The cousin "took a big stick and him on the side of the head," said Williams.
"I started screaming because I see the baby on the floor," she said. "I see the owner holding the dog, trying to pull him off, because the boy's foot was in the dog's mouth."
"The cops came," said Williams. "First, they were going to shoot the dog, but the owner grabbed the dog, and he started to calm the dog down."

The boy and his cousin were taken to Jamaica Hospital, where they were listed in good condition. The boy is expected to recover.
No charges were filed against the dog's owner, police said.
