A New Jersey detective hit by a car during an undercover drug buy operation may have been struck intentionally, according to a prosecutor.
Prosecutor Wayne J. Forrest said the detective was hit Wednesday night in Manville when a driver suddenly accelerated.
The detective has been airlifted to a hospital. Forrest said doctors were doing tests to determine the extent of his injuries but he would not comment specifically on his condition.
Three people were arrested at the scene, about 25 miles north of Trenton.
Forrest said the detective and other undercover officers had stopped the car in a parking lot next to a tavern in the central New Jersey community of about 10,000 residents. He said they identified themselves as police before the driver accelerated.
The detective has worked for the Somerset County prosecutor's office for about eight years.
