A 28-year-old woman was charged with murder late Sunday after allegedly dumping her newborn baby in a garbage bag outside her condominium on Staten Island, police said.
Nausheen Rahman was initially charged with concealment of a human corpse roughly 10 hours after officers found the unconscious infant at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday outside her apartment in the Honey Bee Condominium, police said.
She was charged with second-degree murder after a medical examiner determined that the baby was alive before being placed in the garbage bag.
Rahman went to Staten Island University Hospital Friday evening and told staff that she was bleeding as a result of giving birth, police said. The hospital had no record of her birth and she explained that the infant was born at home and that she had disposed of it, investigators said.
Neighbors told NBC 4 New York that Rahman has lived with her family for several years at the condominium.
"I think it's terrible. And I'm shocked because this is a very good neighborhood. The whole complex is pretty close too, so for this to go unknown, it's interesting," neighbor Mike Stanganelli said.
