The NYPD's hate crimes task force is investigating after a 67-year-old Jewish man was punched to the ground while walking in Manhattan Monday morning in an apparently unprovoked attack, police say.
The victim was walking at Sixth Avenue and West 16th Street in Chelsea shortly before noon when the suspect approached and hit him in the face, according to the NYPD.
The man fell to the ground and his yamaca fell off his head, authorities say. The suspect fled the scene after the attack.
The victim was treated for a bump to his forehead but it doesn’t appear that he suffered any serious injuries.
The hate crimes task force is looking into whether the man was targeted because of his faith, police say. The case has not been deemed a hate crime.
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
