The New York City Council is introducing legislation that would bar building owners from discriminating against affordable housing tenants in the use of building amenities.
The bill, which was introduced Tuesday, came into being after councilmembers received complaints that some tenants in units that cost less than market rate were being prohibited from using building features.
Those include gyms, pools, play rooms and green spaces.
The legislation would require developers and building manages to provide equal access to such facilities.
Additionally, if market-rate tenants can pay a fee to access amenities, those who live in affordable housing units should be given the same deal.
It was not immediately clear when a vote on the legislation would be held.
