Good Samaritans rescued a child from an apartment building fire that injured 10 people in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon, witnesses and fire officials said.
The fire erupted shortly before 3 p.m. in a five-story mixed-use building on Hunts Point Avenue in the Hunts Point neighborhood. Fire officials said the fire spread to the fourth and fifth floors of the building.
Video shows fierce flames and thick smoke shooting from several windows.
At some point, a child was trapped in an apartment and neighbors said two men jumped into action to save her.
"We heard the lady screaming, 'Help! My daughter's in there!'" one of the men said. "So me and my buddy ran inside."
The man said they couldn't get into the apartment the girl was in, so they climbed out a window and used a fire escape to reach her. They kicked in a window air conditioner and pulled her from the building, he said. The girl was later reunited with her family.
Because it was a hot afternoon, dozens of firefighters took turns battling the blaze so they wouldn't succumb to heat exhaustion. The fire was brought under control around 4 p.m.

Six firefighters and four residents, including the young girl, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fire and were taken to area hospitals.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
