One woman was killed and two people were injured in a car crash in Freeport following a police pursuit.
Broken fencing, car parts and other debris were scattered in a front yard near East Seaman Avenue and Rutland Road Thursday morning following the violent Wednesday night crash.
Two plainclothes cops on Stevens Avenue saw William Billups speed past their unmarked vehicle in a 2001 Buick at around 8:15 p.m., authorities said. The officers pursued the car until it stopped at Independence Avenue and North Main Street.
One officer approached the vehicle to pull it over and stop the 45-year-old driver but he took off. Billups, who was driving with a passenger, slammed into a Mercedes sometime after 8 p.m. The impact was so intense that the Mercedes was thrown through a fence and onto the front yard. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
The 33-year-old passenger in the Buick was killed. She suffered blunt force trauma and head trauma, according to police.
Billups was taken to Nassau University Medical Center with leg and head injuries. The 24-year-old Mercedes driver was taken to an area hospital with a broken jaw.
