Two men were killed in a grisly crash that shut down a section of a Long Island highway early Monday, police say.
The victims, ages 22 and 30, both died after something caused their car to leave the roadway and hit a tree on the Meadowbrook State Parkway near the Hempstead Turnpike exit in Uniondale, according to state police. The force of the impact knocked over the tree and badly damaged the majority of the car.
It's not clear what caused the crash.
The parkway’s southbound lanes were closed between the Hempstead Turnpike and the Southern State Parkway while crews investigated, but they reopened at around 7 a.m. Monday.
The crash contributed to a fender-bender on the road when a driver hit a state trooper's cruiser near an exit lane. The trooper was checked out by EMS workers at the scene.
