A man who fell on the tracks in front of an approaching subway train survived by diving into the roadbed between the rails as the train passed over him, police say.
Police say Ralph Mercado was hospitalized in stable condition with a bruised hand after he fell at Union Square in Manhattan.
Witnesses saw Mercado screaming for help as the train barreled toward him. Suzannah Troy told the New York Post onlookers didn't have time to get to him before the train pulled into the station.
It wasn't clear how Mercado, who is in his 50s, fell on the tracks at the northbound R train.
