A 19-year-old man died in a wall collapse at a Brooklyn construction site Thursday morning, police say.
Emergency officers were called to the site, a future apartment building, on Myrtle Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant at about 11:30 a.m. when a cinder block wall collapsed, trapping three people, police said.
"They were underpinning the foundation of a wall and they didn't have it supported properly and the bottom of the wall came out and tumbled on top of them," FDNY chief John Rozas said.
The 19-year-old man was taken to Brooklyn Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other two men were taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
The Department of Buildings issued a stop work order for the site last summer, but the owners and contractor obtained permits in July to continue repairs.
Rick Chandler, who works with the Department of Buildings, said all permits were in place.
"The good thing is they were taking out permits to repair a building, which is what we like to see, but unfortunately it appears they took more of a risk than they should have in doing this excavation," Chandler said.
