A group of young men beat a man in the head with a hammer and punched another on the subway, police say.
About six or seven men punched and kicked the two men, ages 29 and 53, aboard a northbound J train after they got into a disagreement just after 9 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
Police said one of the attackers smashed the 29-year-old in the head with a hammer multiple times before the group exited the train at the Bowery Street station and fled.
The victim suffered bruises to his head and was taken to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition.
Authorities believe the suspects to be in their 20s.
One of the men was last seen wearing a gray coat and black pants. The second was last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants and yellow boots. Another was last seen wearing a black hoodie, and the fourth was last seen wearing a black and brown coat with a black du-rag on his head.
