A woman was killed in a fire at an apartment building in the East Village early Wednesday, officials say.
Police identified the woman as 33-year-old Evelyn Dahab. The Daily News reports Dahab was a writer, who appeared in a few episodes of soap opera "The Guiding Light" and co-owned a Brooklyn bar.
Firefighters said they responded to the five-story building on East First Street and Second Avenue at about 3:15 a.m. and found a small blaze in the basement, according to the FDNY. The blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes.
The woman was pronounced dead shortly after firefighters arrived. No other injuries were reported.
Investigators said an overcrowded power strip caused the blaze.
