Contest to Win ‘Free Bong' by Supporting ‘Sex and the City' Star's Governor Campaign Sparks Controversy

What to Know

  • Cynthia Nixon's campaign has launched a "free bong" contest for marijuana legalization supporters who also support her candidacy
  • The prized bong will be signed by “Broad City” stars Abbi Jacobsen and Ilana Glazer, both of whom support legalization
  • A half-dozen faith leaders have condemned the contest as "a mockery"

Cynthia Nixon fans who agree with the former "Sex and the City" star that marijuana should be legalized can support her campaign for governor of New York by entering a contest to win a free bong -- a move some members of the city's faith community have condemned as a "mockery" of a "serious" issue.

Nixon, who portrayed Miranda Hobbes on the romantic comedy-drama from 1998-2004, has voiced her opinion about pot legalization in the past. In a Forbes interview in May, Nixon stated that [marijuana] licenses are a “form of reparations” for the War on Drugs.

The prized bong will be signed by “Broad City” stars Abbi Jacobsen and Ilana Glazer, both of whom support legalization. The contest website says it "may be a silly contest but it's a serious issue."

But six New York City faith leaders condemned the contest.

"Handing out signed bongs to donors sends the wrong message to our community and makes a mockery of the serious underlying criminal justice issue at stake for black and brown children," the faith leaders, including four Baptist reverends, said in a statement.

Nixon’s spokeswoman Lauren Hitt says about 2,000 people have entered. The contest encourages donations, however entering the contest does not require them. The contest is open now until July 16.

Nixon is running against Governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination. Cuomo's views last year expressed that he opposed legalizing marijuana for recreational purposes but since then he has called for a study of the issue.
