Carnegie Deli has closed its doors to customers after Con Edison discovered what the utility is calling "theft of service conditions" at the iconic eatery.
A voice recording at the deli informed callers on Saturday that the locale was closed for "Con Edison repairs."
The utility discovered a gas leak at the midtown site earlier this week, said Bob McGee, a spokesman for Con Edison. When crews returned to the scene on Thursday, they discovered “theft of service conditions” due to a diverted service line, McGee said.
Authorities believe the explosion in the East Village on March 26 that killed two may have been caused by someone improperly tapping a gas line.
The city Department of Buildings didn't immediately return a call about the matter. There was no immediate response to an email to Carnegie Deli's press representative.
Carnegie Deli is frequented by tourists who indulge in their large pastrami sandwiches. It has also made numerous pop culture cameos. For instance, scenes in Woody Allen's "Broadway Danny Rose" were shot there.
