Two teenagers were shot in Brooklyn Friday evening, one of them fatally, and police are searching for the gunman, authorities say.
A 13-year-old boy was shot twice in the torso and once in the leg, and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the groin at the Marcy Houses complex in Bedford-Stuyvesant, police said.
The 16-year-old boy, Dantee Bastone, was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died, police said.
The younger teen was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is expected to survive.
Bishop Robert Shaw of the nearby Greater Final Frontier Church said he heard a barrage of gunfire and then saw the two wounded boys, one lying on the ground and another on the bench. The shootings sent frightened people screaming and running in different directions, he said.
"It was a very eery feeling in the air," he said.
Shaw said he recognized the boys as residents of the neighborhood.
Local
Police, some heavily armed, immediately swarmed the neighborhood and closed off the shooting scene. Officers were seen rounding up and taking into custody about 10 teenagers, who were questioned but not considered suspects, investigators said Saturday.
Police haven't said if the victims were targeted but Shaw said he believes it stemmed from some sort of gang-related retaliation.
"I just think it's time for this to stop. It happens all too often," said Shaw.
