Police are searching for a driver who fatally struck a man in Brooklyn, then took off.
A 1996 green Mitsubishi Montero was approaching the intersection of Rockaway Parkway and Avenue J in Canarsie at about 9 p.m. when it slammed on its brakes to avoid hitting an 81-year-old man, police said.
A second car -- a dark-colored sedan -- approached the intersection and ended up striking the man. The driver fled.
The Mitsubishi driver remained on the scene, and is not suspected of any criminality.
The victim has been identified as Luis Ruiz of Brooklyn.
Police are investigating.
