Authorities are investigating the death of an 8-year-old girl in Newark.

Emergency crews were called to an apartment on South Orange Avenue Sunday afternoon on a report of an unresponsive child, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. The apartment appears to be above a pharmacy.

The girl was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

A man who lives nearby said it's very unusual to have such a major police investigation in the area.

"Nothing really happens in this location because a lot of police presence," Torrance Servance said. "You have a lot of school kids right here and the bus stops right there so that is very unusual for something to happen in this district."

The prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which include detectives from the Newark Police Department, is handling the investigation.

No other information was immediately available.
