Four homes were destroyed and three others were severely damaged when a two-alarm blaze ripped through a tightly packed residential street in the Bronx near the Throgs Neck Bridge Sunday evening, firefighters say.
Crews were called to the fire on Schuyler Terrace, a few blocks from SUNY Maritime College, just before 6 p.m., according to the FDNY. When they arrived, firefighters saw two bungalow houses fully overcome by fire.
The flames continued to spread, engulfing two more houses, firefighters say. A total of seven homes sustained damage before crews were able to bring the blaze under control at about 7:30 p.m.
The homes were tightly clustered -- some only 2 or 3 feet apart -- which contributed to the quick spread of the blaze, said Deputy Assistant Chief Joe Woznica.
"Because the houses are bungalow-type houses and they're stacked one on top of another, that's the reason we had such an extensive spread of the fire to seven buildings," he said.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, and it's not clear how many people have been displaced, firefighters say. Red Cross relief crews were sent to the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
