A 16-year-old girl was shot and killed in her home in New Jersey Thursday, authorities said.
Alisha Colon was found at around 6:20 p.m. in the bedroom of her second-floor apartment on Belgrove Drive in Kearny with a gunshot wound to her head, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said.
"She was a really sweet girl," said Colon's friend and neighbor Jazzmera Lawson. "She doesn't really get into trouble."
Police had responded earlier in the day to a report of a fight involving some of the victim’s relatives in front of her building, prosecutors said.
Colon was not involved in the fight, prosecutors said.
Belleville resident Edwin Mendez Jr., 37, was arrested with unlawful possession of a weapon and terroristic threats for his involvement in the earlier dispute, prosecutors said.
No arrests have been made in connection with the Colon's death.
Police are still investigating whether the earlier fight and Colon’s death were connected.
Lawson said she heard an argument coming from Colon's apartment late Thursday afternoon after the street fight.
"I didn't hear no voices, I just heard a lot of fighting, just fighting like someone trying to get away from someone or something," Lawson said. "I heard running down the stairs. I really don't know what went on it just sounded like a lot of people running down the stairs and then the cops showed up."
