11 Injured, 2 Critically, in Bronx Apartment Fire

Two people were critically injured and three others were left in serious condition following a blaze that tore through parts of a Bronx apartment building, fire officials said.

Six others were taken to a hospital with minor injuries after Friday evening's fire near Van Cortlandt Park.

The Fire Department was called at around 5 p.m. to a six-story building on Gouverneur Avenue.

It took 106 firefighters about 90 minutes to get the two-alarm blaze under control. The fire destroyed four of the building's 67 apartments, and caused five others to be vacated due to damage, according to an American Red Cross representative. At least 18 people were displaced.

The blaze was on the fifth and sixth floors, firefighters said.

Possible phone numbers for the building owners rang unanswered. City records show the building dates to at least 1944.
