A family had to flee their home in Rockland County after flames tore through the residence early Monday morning, fire officials said.
Officials believe eight people were in the Hillcrest home when the fire broke out and that all of them managed to escape.
Hillcrest Fire Dept. Chief John Erzen said two people were injured in the fire. The homeowner suffered a burn to his ear and a firefighter was injured and treated at the scene.
Erzen said firefighters got a call about the fire at 12:45 a.m. and that the first units arrived at the Orchard Street home 4 or 5 minutes later. In all, four fire departments responded.
When firefighters arrived at the scene flames were shooting out from the roof. Erzen said that the fire started on the first or second floor and then spread to every floor in the home, including the attic.
Teams of firefighters attacked the fire from inside and out. They brought the fire under control sometime before 2 a.m.
Erzen said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
