A Pakistani military officer arrested and questioned in connection with the Times Square car bomb investigation was set free and is not connected to the plot, Pakistani officials said.
Major Adnan Ejaz was released last week after he was questioned about his possible ties to terror suspect Faisal Shahzad.
Pakistani authorities had said they suspected Major Ejaz knew Shahzad but now say they do not believe the former military officer helped the suspected terrorist in the bombing attempt.
United States attorney Preet Bharara declined comment late last week about any of the suspects in Pakistan -- including the major -- being questioned in connection with the Times Square terror plot.
Investigators said they continue to examine who in Pakistan provided Shahzad with bomb training as well as cash to try to carry out an attack in New York.
Officials have said they suspect members of the Pakistani Taliban played a role. Several associates of Shahzad remain in custody as Pakistan assists the U.S. in tracking possible accomplices.
NYPD and FBI officials have said once he arrived back in the U.S., Shahzad operated on his own. Investigators said money remitters from Boston, New York and New Jersey who gave Shahzad money sent from overseas likely did not know he was planning an attack.
After cooperating and telling what he knows to the FBI, Shahzad remains behind bars in the Metropolitan Correctional Center on terrorism charges.
