This coming Fashion Week, designers and editors will have access to a new mode of transportation to add to their arsenal of yellow cabs and luxury sedans: designer bicycles.
Bowery Lane Bicycles and the Fashion Center Business Improvement District (BID) have enlisted Diane von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung, Isaac Mizrahi, Nanette Lepore, Elie Tahari, Rebecca Taylor and more to trick out a fleet of 30 two-wheelers for the "Tour de Fashion" bike-sharing program, running September 8-15.
Here's how it works: The bicycles will be available at staffed stations on several of the plazas along Broadway, and will be available free of charge (with a security deposit). What's more, the bikes will come equipped with maps of safe routes between the Garment District and all the shows.
Bowery Lane Bicycles CEO Michael Salvatore told us that the his team is delivering the bikes to the designers this week, and is "super-excited" to see how each designer transforms the cycles.
"We always felt that cycling was an extension of fashion," said Salvatore. "To have all these great designers participate just reaffirms our belief and why we started manufacturing bicycles here in NYC."
