Laura and Kate Mulleavy -- this year's CFDA winners -- certainly did not disappoint their fans this season. The ladies of Rodarte staged the most theatrical runway show thus far, complete with fog, green lighting, tattooed warrior-looking models, and some truly fierce fashion.
The collection, apparently inspired by Death Valley, was horror film-worthy in the best possible way -- tons of shredded hems, studs, tight shiny pants and fringe. Some of the dresses evoked the same lattice-work fabric the duo played with for their fall collection, though this time the effect was more bondage than ballgown, as strips of leather and shimmering fabrics created spiderweb-like cutouts around the models' bodies. Later dresses had a wonderfully recycled (or maybe "trash" fashion?) vibe, seemingly composed of shredded material of all varieties, wound together to create fantastical-looking tight cocktail dresses out of plaids, florals, tie-dye, and everything in between.
The whole thing, truth be told, felt rather like the watching Rodarte's take on the witches of Macbeth, between all the dark shimmer, plaid, tribal tattoos, and green lighting.
The Mulleavy sisters have officially put together one of the most original shows in recent memory -- and we thank them, also, for showing runway looks with pants. Bless you, ladies.
